Precise were looking to engage a partner to help design and build an HTML 5 application that would enable mobile use of the Media Platform features. It needed to be device independent, deliver ultra-fast performance and be simple to use. The design was required to align with Precise brand guidelines and the application needed to interface with their backend systems.
We created an HTML 5 app which would allow a single app to support iOS and Android devices without the need to support and maintain device specific apps going forward. The app supported login capabilities and for each user a curated media pack was viewable in both online and offline modes. The media pack consisted of relevant news and articles from multiple channels such as high-quality scans of print articles, as well as links and to online articles and social media.
The app delivered both online and offline modes to support the prime use case: media and PR executives wanting to consume the media pack during their daily commute where connectivity could be patchy. The app also supported infinite scrolling for large volumes of articles where they were loaded and removed on scroll - this was required in order to stay within memory limits of the mobile devices. The result was a clean and simple UX ensuring a seamless scrolling UI.
In addition, the scanned print images were high quality and heavy weight, which needed consideration to stay within the device’s memory capabilities. By introducing the lazy loading of article images as well as efficient garbage collection techniques, we were able to load much larger images without impacting the user experience.
The finished app delivered an entirely new, digital experience to its users. Complementing and in some cases replacing the need for hard copies of media packs. The app also enabled the content to be shared immediately, through the app, whilst on the move. The app was widely used by Precise customers and was attributed runner up prize for the Tech awards.
