Overview

Arts Jobs is Arts Council England's popular website and mailing list service that promotes jobs, opportunities, and news in the arts community. All content is generated by its users, which range from internationally-renowned galleries through to individual artists.

The Challenge

Arts Council England came to us with the aim of capitalising Arts Jobs’s high volume of traffic. Our team knew exactly what to do: we not only had to re-develop Arts Jobs’s website with a simple to use, responsive branded design but also revamp the previous inflexible proprietary system for complete control over their content.

Our Approach

We started the project with insight: by working closely with the Arts Council, we were able to clearly identify their business objectives and branding guidelines in order to put these at the heart of our strategy. By taking this approach, we were also able to understand better the user journey, and thus ensure a perfect end result. We relaunched the service with a website designed to scale to bursts of traffic. The new layout presents the essential information in a simple-to-navigate format for the user.

Personalised Features

Registration is now required, and once this is complete the new website allows the users to personalise emails by art form, region and salary. For example, a user can choose to receive a daily or weekly email of theatre jobs paying over £20,000 per year in London. To avoid disruptions, we moderate all content and filter out spam and inappropriate posts. The website is also fully responsive to ensure that it delivers first class user experience no matter which device customers are using. In addition, we have integrated a heavyweight email system, capable of sending out hundred thousand HTML emails per week. All of this was developed using the TYPO3 Open Source CMS.

Social Media Presense

To further promote the service, we built a Facebook application, enabling users to display a dynamically filtered list of jobs on their Facebook profiles. An automated feed was also created on Twitter and continues to be very popular with over 86,000 followers.

Result

We’re delighted with the new website and the continually increasing statistics. Since the new site launch, visitors have increased exponentially, page visits have improved and the average visit duration has lengthened. Additionally, Artjobs has become the number one online jobs community for the arts.
