Multi language website for ASK Education for Hairdressers
Our work on ASK Education for Hairdressers (www.ask-schwarzkopf.com), a site aimed at hairdressing professionals, overhauled an existing site into new templates with a new CMS, a new data structure and new functionality.
We imported over 20,000 pages, thousands of files and images, hundreds of language-specific phases, and 40,000 users from Ruby on Rails into TYPO3 using purpose written scripts.
With content in 22 languages, the system we developed enables, for example, the Canadian site to inherit sections or pages from its American equivalent, but to also have its own bespoke pages where necessary. We also included a right-to-left template for the Arabic language site.
Each user has a profile, which records their language, contact and other preferences.
The site enables users to work out country-dependent salon costs through a variety of bespoke calculation tools, 'favourite' pages that they will return to, batch print pages as specifically designed PDFs, and log in with Facebook Connect.
Search engine optimisation and accessibility were improved by replacing the previous site's Flash-based functionality with rich interactive jQuery components.
The same TYPO3 CMS framework, also drives a multi-lingual mobile site (m.ask-schwarzkopf.com). By default this shows the same content in a mobile-optimised stylesheet, but also allows an editor to display mobile-specific content on a given page.
We worked closely with Schwarzkopf's design agency gm-design to refine the user journey, and deliver a genuinely useful site for hairdressers.
